Lifts and levels

What does a leveling kit do?

A leveling kit raises the front of a truck so it sits even with the rear, removing the factory nose-down rake. Most kits add about 2 to 2.5 inches up front. The truck sits flat, the front wheel wells gain room for a slightly bigger tire, and the ride stays close to stock.

We install 2 and 2.5 inch Rough Country leveling kits at our Tyler and Longview shops, and we align every one before it leaves. The builds below are ours.

This is part of our guide to leveling kits vs lift kits. That one compares the two. This one opens the box on the leveling kit and shows you what's inside.

What does a leveling kit do to a truck?

A leveling kit lifts the front end until it matches the height of the rear. That removes the factory rake, which on most trucks is about 2 to 3 inches of the rear sitting higher than the front.

The factory builds rake in on purpose. Put a load in the bed or a trailer on the hitch and the rear squats down to level. The catch is that most of us spend 95% of our lives with an empty bed, so the truck spends 95% of its life looking like it's sniffing the pavement for loose change.

What is a leveling kit? The four kinds

A leveling kit is a set of parts that raises the front suspension, and it comes in four main styles. Which one your truck takes depends on how the front suspension is built, so the year, make and model decides it, not your preference.

Kit styleHow it raises the frontNotes from our bays
Strut spacerA spacer sits on top of the factory strutSimple, keeps the factory strut

Torsion keyNew keys reset the torsion bars higherOnly on trucks with torsion bar fronts
Coil spring or spacerTaller coils or a coil spacer up frontCommon on solid-axle trucks and Jeeps

None of them touch the rear. That's the whole point, and it's why a level is a smaller job than a lift. The parts list fits in a shoebox. A full lift kit shows up on a pallet and makes the delivery driver sigh.

Leveling kit before and after: what changes

After a leveling kit, the truck sits flat, the front tires fill more of the wheel well, and there's room up front for one tire size bigger. On a half-ton that usually means a 33. Ride comfort stays close to stock because most kits keep the factory springs doing the work.

Three smaller changes come along for the ride. The front end angles change, so the truck needs an alignment. Bigger tires make your speedometer read a little slow until it's recalibrated. And you will look at your own truck in every store window in town, which isn't a mechanical change, but it's real.

What a leveling kit doesn't do

A leveling kit doesn't add ground clearance under the axles, doesn't raise the rear, and doesn't add towing capacity. It changes the stance and the tire room. Anything beyond that is a lift kit's job.

So if the plan is a ranch road that ate a rocker panel last winter, a level alone won't save it. If the plan is a flat truck and 33s, a level is exactly the right amount of kit. We spell out where that line sits in body lift vs suspension lift.

One more thing it doesn't do: void your warranty. A dealer has to show the kit caused a specific failure before denying a repair, which we cover in does a leveling kit void your warranty.

Want the flat stance without the guesswork? We'll match the right kit to your truck and handle the alignment. See our leveling kit installs in Tyler and Longview.

Trucks we've leveled

I could talk about leveling kits in theory all day, but the work orders tell it better. Here's what's gone out of our bays recently.

  1. 2 inch level kit on a 2020 half-ton with 24 inch black and milled mesh wheels and Venom Power tires. That's the gray Silverado in these photos.
  2. 2 inch Rough Country N3 leveling struts on a 2021-and-up Chevy/GMC full-size SUV, with 20x9 Gangstar X301 wheels and 33x11.50R20 tires. Sensors programmed, aligned, out the same day.
  3. 2.5 inch Rough Country level on a 2023 Ram 2500 with 20x10 Fuel wheels and 35 inch Predator tires.
  4. 2 inch level on a brand-new 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 Duramax with 49 miles on it.

Cody Cook brought his truck to our Tyler shop for a level and left a review that sums up how we do it: "Took my truck in for a level. Owner noticed a broken sway link and replaced it at cost of the part. Lift looks great. Ride feels amazing."

Leveling kit questions

Does a leveling kit affect ride quality?
Not much. Most leveling kits keep the factory springs and shocks doing the work, so the ride stays close to stock. Bigger, heavier tires change the feel more than the kit does.
Does a leveling kit hurt gas mileage?
The kit alone barely changes it. Bigger, heavier tires and a taller front usually cost some mileage. That's common shop experience, not a measured number for your truck.
Can you tow with a leveling kit?
Yes. A leveled truck tows fine, but the rear squats a bit more under a heavy load because the factory rake is gone. Tell the shop if you tow heavy so the kit and setup match.
Do you need an alignment after a leveling kit?
Yes. Raising the front changes the alignment angles. Every leveling kit we install leaves aligned.
