A leveling kit raises only the front of a truck, usually about 2 to 2.5 inches, so it sits flat instead of nose-down. A lift kit raises the whole truck, front and rear, usually 2 to 6 inches or more, for bigger tires and more clearance. Both change your alignment, so both need one after install.
We install Rough Country leveling and lift kits at our Tyler and Longview shops, and we've been in the tire business since 2007. Every tire size below came off a truck we built.
Leveling kit vs lift kit: the difference
A leveling kit raises the front of the truck to match the rear. A lift kit raises the front and the rear together. That's the whole difference, and everything else on this page is just what each one costs you in ride, towing and tire size.
Here's why the question exists at all. Your truck left the factory doing a slight bow, nose down, like it was apologizing for the sticker price. Most trucks ship with about 2 to 3 inches of rake, which is the rear sitting higher so it doesn't sag to the ground the day you hook up a trailer.
| Leveling kit | Lift kit | |
|---|---|---|
| What it raises | Front only | Front and rear |
| Typical height | About 2 to 2.5 inches up front | 2 to 6+ inches, all four corners |
| Tires we've fit | 33x11.50R20 on a 2 inch level, 35s on a 2.5 inch level (Ram 2500, Jeep) | 33s on a 3 inch lift (Titan XD), 35s and up on bigger lifts |
| Ride | Close to stock | Changes more as the lift gets taller |
| Towing and hauling | Works, rear squats a bit more under load | Depends on the kit, ask before you tow heavy |
| Alignment after | Yes | Yes |
How does a lift kit work?
A lift kit raises the whole truck by replacing or extending the suspension parts that set ride height. Depending on the kit, that means taller struts or coil spacers up front, longer shocks, new control arms or knuckles, and blocks or new leaf springs in the rear.
Think of a leveling kit that got a promotion and stopped returning your calls. The lift touches more parts, so it takes longer to install and changes more about how the truck drives. In exchange you get real clearance under the axles and room for a tire that makes people slow down in the Walmart parking lot.
The lifts we put on run from a 2 inch kit on a Toyota 4Runner to a 3 inch Rough Country lift on a diesel Titan XD, and up to 6 inch kits on trucks that see more caliche than concrete. If you're already picturing yours, start with our lift and leveling kits in Tyler and Longview and we'll match a kit to the truck.
What does a leveling kit do?
A leveling kit takes out the factory rake by raising the front end, usually with a spacer on top of the strut, a taller strut, or new torsion keys. The rear stays put. The truck sits flat, and the front wheel wells gain room for a slightly bigger tire.
That's it. No new control arms, no talk about "articulation" from a guy in a sponsored hat. It's the cheapest way to fix the nose dip that's bugged you since the day you drove off the lot, and you'll catch yourself looking at the truck in store windows afterward.
We go through the parts, the before-and-after, and the trucks we've leveled in what a leveling kit actually does to your truck.
Leveling kit pros and cons
The pros: a flat stance, room for one tire size up, a ride that feels close to stock, and a much smaller bill than a lift. The cons: you give back the rake the factory built in for towing, and taller tires can mean a little more road noise and a slower speedometer until it's recalibrated.
A leveled half-ton still tows. It just squats a bit more with a heavy trailer on, like a man settling into a recliner after Thanksgiving. If you pull a gooseneck every weekend, tell us before we touch anything, because that changes which kit makes sense.
- Pro: fixes the nose-down look without changing the whole suspension
- Pro: clears a slightly bigger tire, often a 33 on a half-ton
- Con: less rear headroom for heavy loads and trailers
- Con: a front-end change means an alignment, every time
Body lift vs suspension lift
A body lift raises the cab and bed off the frame with spacer blocks, while a suspension lift raises the whole truck, frame and all. A body lift adds 2 to 5 inches with no added ground clearance, because the axles and frame don't move.
So the rock that scraped your differential last month will scrape it again, just with a better view from the driver's seat. For the full breakdown, read which lift is right for your truck: body or suspension.
Does a leveling kit void your warranty?
No, not by itself. Under federal law a dealer can't void your whole warranty because you installed aftermarket parts. The FTC says the dealer has to prove the part caused the damage before it can deny coverage on that repair.
In plain terms: the dealer can't refuse to fix your radio because the truck sits two inches higher. They'd have to explain how a strut spacer broke the radio, and nobody can tell that story with a straight face. The details, and how to keep your coverage clean, are in does a leveling kit void your warranty.
Do you need an alignment after a leveling kit?
Yes. Raising the front end changes the angles your tires sit at, so a leveling kit or lift kit needs an alignment after install. Skip it and the tires will tell on you, one worn shoulder at a time, starting about the week you finally stop thinking about it.
Every lift and level we install leaves aligned. We handle the alignment, so you don't have to book it somewhere else and hope they get to it this week.
What we see in the shop
I've been in the tire business since 2007, and I still stare at a fresh lift in the lot like it's a new grandbaby. Here's what's actually rolled out of our bays, straight from the work orders and our Instagram.
- 2 inch Rough Country N3 leveling struts on a 2021-and-up Chevy/GMC full-size SUV, with 20x9 Gangstar X301 wheels and 33x11.50R20 tires. Sensors programmed, aligned, out the same day.
- 2.5 inch Rough Country level on a 2023 Ram 2500 with 20x10 Fuel wheels and 35 inch Predator tires.
- 3 inch Rough Country lift on a 2017 Nissan Titan XD Cummins with 22x12 Fittipaldi wheels and 33 inch Predator tires.
- 2 inch lift on a 2024 Toyota 4Runner at the Tyler shop.
One Longview customer summed up the level-and-tires combo better than I can: "These guys put a Rough Country 2.5" Leveling kit and 4 new 35"Toyo Tires on my Jeep. Great price, super friendly and installed in less than a day." That's Samuel Thompson, from our Google reviews.
